The signature
The overwater villas — the original Water Retreats and the newer Water Reserves — are among the largest in the Maldives: more floating houses than hotel rooms, with private pools, catamaran nets and, in most categories, that famous slide off the deck. The party trick is the master bedroom: press a button and the roof retracts so you stargaze from bed. A handful of island villas sit on the beach for those who prefer sand underfoot.
The Gathering is the resort's multi-level overwater hub — restaurants, bar and spa stacked above the lagoon like a treehouse on stilts. Beyond it, dining goes theatrical: dinner-and-a-film at the silent overwater cinema, destination meals arranged around the island, and Soneva's beloved complimentary ice cream and chocolate parlours, which quietly ruin all other hotels for you.
Medhufaru sits inside one of the largest private lagoons in the Maldives — pale, shallow, sandy-bottomed and swimmable straight off your deck. Honesty required: it's more infinity pool than aquarium. This is not a step-off-your-villa house-reef resort; snorkelling and diving happen by boat out on Noonu Atoll's proper reefs, which the resort runs trips to daily.
Perfect for honeymooners, milestone celebrations, and families — The Den is one of the largest kids' clubs in the Maldives, and multi-bedroom reserves swallow whole clans. Book elsewhere if you want vibrant coral at your villa steps (choose a house-reef island), if seaplanes are a dealbreaker, or if the budget is finite — Jani sits at the very top of Maldives pricing, and it knows it.
The experience
Your shoes go into a bag on the seaplane dock and, per Soneva's founding mantra, you won't see them again until departure. From the air, Medhufaru's lagoon reads as a private sea — an expanse of pale blue in the quiet Noonu Atoll with villas strung along winding jetties. A dedicated Barefoot Guardian (Soneva's word for butler) runs your stay, and the rhythm settles fast: slide into the lagoon before breakfast, sail or paddle across water with almost nobody on it, and end the day with the bedroom roof rolled back and the Milky Way where a ceiling should be.
What separates Jani from the overwater pack is that the spectacle is built in, not bolted on. The retractable roof and the deck slide aren't gimmicks you try once — they change how you use the villa. Evenings drift toward the silent cinema over the water, where films play to wireless headphones so the lagoon stays quiet, and toward stargazing sessions at the resort's overwater observatory. Even the sustainability ethos — Soneva pioneered zero-waste resort culture long before it was fashionable — is worn lightly rather than lectured.
It is also, against the honeymoon stereotype, a genuinely great family resort. The Den kids' club is a destination in itself, the lagoon is shallow and safe, and the ice cream parlour is free and unlimited. Couples who want silence still get it — the villas are spaced far enough apart that the resort rarely feels occupied at all.
Plan & book
Getting there is a ~40-minute seaplane from Malé's Velana International — one of the prettier commutes on the planet, but seaplanes fly daylight hours only. If your international flight lands in the evening, plan an overnight in or near Malé and fly out fresh the next morning; we build that into every Jani itinerary rather than letting it become an airport surprise. Pack with seaplane cabin and weight limits in mind — soft-sided bags travel easiest.
December through April is the dry season: the calmest lagoon, the clearest water, and the most reliable open-roof stargazing — that's when Jani is most itself, and priced like it. May through November brings quick tropical squalls, softer rates and better availability; the huge sheltered lagoon takes the edge off green-season chop better than exposed, surf-facing islands do, which makes Jani one of the smarter shoulder-season splurges in the country.

By seaplane — roughly 40 minutes from Malé's Velana International Airport, arranged through the resort. Seaplanes operate in daylight only, so if you land in Malé in the evening you'll overnight near the airport and fly out the next morning. We time flights and hotel nights around this so the transfer feels seamless rather than stressful.
No — the slide is a feature of most overwater villa categories (both the original Water Retreats and the newer Water Reserves offer with-slide options), not every villa; the beach-set island villas don't have them. The retractable roof over the master bed is the other signature to confirm. If the slide is the reason you're going (fair), tell us — we'll lock in a category that definitely has one rather than leaving it to chance.
