The best-kept open secret in travel: since guesthouses were legalised on inhabited islands, the Maldives has run on two price lists. Same turquoise, same reefs, same mantas — from about $150–250 a day per person, all-in, if you know the local-island circuit. Here’s how it works.

How the budget circuit works
Ferries & shared boats
MTCC public ferries link the islands slowly and absurdly cheaply; shared speedboats cost more and run most days on popular routes — always check the current dated schedule, since weather and demand shift departures. The route IS the sightseeing.
Excursions à la carte
Sandbank picnics, whale-shark trips, night fishing, resort day passes — local operators sell many of the same experiences resorts package, priced per trip — vessels, group sizes and permits vary by operator.
Local-island etiquette
Inhabited islands are dry (no alcohol) and ask for modest dress away from designated “bikini beaches.” It’s a small trade for an authentic Maldives most visitors never meet.
The honest version
What you trade, what you keep
You keep: the water. House-reef snorkelling off Dhigurah, whale sharks on the South Ari edge, sandbanks at low tide, bioluminescent nights. The ocean does not check your room rate.
You trade: seclusion and cocktails. Local islands are real communities — school runs, mosques, football at dusk — and the beaches you can swim on in swimwear are designated ones. Some travellers find that a downgrade; many find it’s the point.
The hybrid move: five guesthouse nights plus a one- or two-night resort finale books both Maldives — the country and the postcard — for less than a week overwater. It’s our most-recommended first-timer shape, and we’ll happily build it.
