No single island can reach what a boat can. A week on a liveaboard strings together the channels, cleaning stations and night dives of half a dozen atolls — sharks stacked in the current, mantas at the cleaning rocks, whale sharks under the lights. This is the diver’s Maldives.

Where the boats go
Huvadhoo & beyond
Far-south charters (often Jan–Apr) run the big-current channels — tiger sharks at Fuvahmulah, silvertips, hammerhead dawn dives. Advanced divers only, and worth every bar of nitrogen.
Follow the clear water
NE monsoon (Dec–Apr): clearest water on eastern channel mouths. SW monsoon (May–Nov): west sides clear, plankton pulls in the filter feeders. Good boats literally chase the visibility.
Comfort has tiers
Steel-hulled boutique boats with en-suites and dhoni dive tenders run $250–500/night; budget boats half that. Nitrox, three-to-four dives a day and full board are standard almost everywhere.
Before you book
Is a liveaboard your trip?
Bring: an advanced certification and ideally 20+ logged dives — the Maldives is drift country and the good sites run with current. Nitrox certification pays for itself by day two. Travel insurance that covers diving is non-negotiable, and most boats want to see your cert cards at booking, not at the gangway.
Consider the hybrid: a week on the boat plus two decompression nights in a beach villa is the perfect shape — you surface, you spa, you fly. And non-diving partners aren’t stranded: several boutique boats run snorkel guides and spa cabins, or we split the week — boat for you, island for them, reunion on the sandbank.
