Maldives Atoll Guide
Meemu Atoll is what the rest of the Maldives looked like before the seaplanes got busy: a scatter of fishing islands around a sleepy capital called Muli, a couple of resorts, and channel after channel with nobody on them. If your idea of a good trip is fewer boats, livelier reefs and a genuine surf break at the end of it, this is your atoll.
The highlights
Meemu's diving is classic outer-atoll Maldives — current-swept kandus along the eastern rim, soft-coral overhangs, and the reef sharks, eagle rays and trevally that come with moving water. The difference here is arithmetic: with so few resorts and only the occasional liveaboard passing through, you will rarely share a site with another boat.
Development never really arrived. Meemu has long had just a couple of resorts — the over-water-heavy Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa and the quieter Medhufushi Island Resort — plus a small circuit of guesthouses on Muli and neighbouring inhabited islands. Scarcity is the whole point: it keeps the water empty and the pace slow.
December to April is the dry northeast-monsoon stretch — calm crossings, reliable sun, the easiest diving conditions. Surfers should flip the calendar: the southern-hemisphere swell that lights up the Muli-area breaks runs roughly March through October. Shoulder months can hand you a bit of both, with softer rates thrown in.
Meemu suits divers, surfers and repeat Maldives visitors who have done the busy atolls and want the volume turned down — plus budget travellers happy in a guesthouse. It is the wrong pick if you want a dozen restaurants, a spa village and nightlife; nothing here is big enough for any of that, and the people who come wouldn't have it otherwise.
The atoll
Officially named Mulaku Atoll, Meemu sits on the eastern side of the central Maldives, roughly a 45-minute seaplane hop south of Malé. Its inhabited islands — the capital Muli among them — still make their living from fishing and small-scale farming, and tourism arrived here in fragments rather than waves. There is no strip of back-to-back resorts, no flotilla of day boats. The atoll simply never got developed, and that accident of history is now its best feature.
The water is where Meemu earns the trip. Channels cut through the atoll's ocean-facing rim, and when the current runs they do what Maldivian kandus do everywhere: pull in reef sharks, eagle rays, schooling trevally and clouds of fusiliers over soft-coral walls. What they don't pull in is traffic. Dive boats here are counted in ones, not dozens, so sites feel the way the famous ones further north felt twenty years ago.
Then there is the surf. The atoll's eastern corner around Muli catches the same long-period southern swell that powers the Maldives' better-known breaks, and the right-handers off Muli itself have a quiet reputation among surfers who plan around crowds rather than contests. Access is by boat, the season runs roughly March to October, and on a good day the lineup might be you and the people you came with.
Practical
For years Meemu had no airport of its own; that changed in 2025, when a small domestic airstrip opened on Muli. You now arrive one of two ways: a seaplane from Velana International straight to your island — around 45 minutes, daylight hours only — or a roughly 45-minute domestic flight to Muli followed by a speedboat leg, depending on the property. Your resort or guesthouse arranges the transfer when you book; you don't freelance this part. One planning note: because seaplanes stop flying at dusk, a late-evening international arrival can still mean a night near Malé before you carry on.
The choice of beds is simple because the list is short. The atoll's couple of resorts — Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa and Medhufushi Island Resort — give you the over-water villa, house reef and bar that most people picture when they picture the Maldives. The guesthouses on Muli and other inhabited islands cost a fraction of that, put you inside a working island community, and are the practical base for surf trips. Local-island rules apply there: no alcohol, and swimwear stays on the designated bikini beach.
