No underwater dining room — if that's your bucket-list item, look elsewhere.
Thilamaafushi sits in a wide, calm lagoon with a house reef you can snorkel straight off the island — turtles and rays are regular sightings. Lhaviyani Atoll is quietly one of the Maldives' best dive regions, with storied wreck and channel sites a short boat ride away, and the resort's dive and watersports center runs trips daily. The lagoon's gentle grade also makes it a genuinely toddler-friendly swim setup by Maldives standards.
Book it if you're a Bonvoy loyalist, a family that needs real multi-bedroom villas, or a design-minded couple who wants overwater without ultra-luxe pricing. Skip it if you want hushed adults-only seclusion, butler-per-villa service, or caviar-trolley polish — this island is social, creative and family-forward, and the $$$$$ names do quiet opulence better.
The resort experience
Le Méridien arrived in the Maldives in September 2021 and brought its whole personality with it: contemporary art and mid-century-leaning design run through the island, from villa interiors to public spaces that feel closer to a bright coastal gallery than the usual driftwood-and-thatch formula. If most Maldives resorts whisper, this one has a point of view — and after your third beige overwater resort, that's more refreshing than it sounds.
The daily rhythm is easygoing and family-welcoming without tipping into theme-park chaos. Getting there is a 35–40 minute seaplane from Velana International (Malé) — one of the prettier transfers in the country, crossing a string of atolls before dropping into Lhaviyani's lagoon. The catch every first-timer misses: seaplanes only fly in daylight. If your international flight lands in the evening, you'll overnight near the airport and fly out the next morning.
