Le 1947 — named for Château Cheval Blanc's fabled vintage — is the fine-dining flagship, serving serious French gastronomy you would not expect this far from Paris. Around it sit a brasserie-style all-day venue, Japanese and East Asian tables, and waterside Mediterranean seafood, backed by a wine cellar that benefits from the family connections. Evenings here are chic rather than stuffy, but this is a resort where people do dress for dinner.
The maison sits in a sheltered Noonu Atoll lagoon that stays calm and pool-clear most of the year — ideal for swimming, paddling and watersports straight off the deck. Honest note: the star here is the lagoon, not a legendary house reef, so keen snorkelers and divers will take the boat out to Noonu's quiet, under-trafficked sites rather than stepping off the villa. The dedicated spa island, reached by dhoni, makes even the commute to your massage feel like an excursion.
Book it if you love design, service choreography and spa culture — honeymooners and style-driven couples are the core crowd, and families are genuinely welcome with kids' facilities and multi-bedroom villas. Skip it if you want castaway-barefoot simplicity, an all-inclusive wristband, or a world-class reef at your villa steps — other atolls do those better, for less. This is the Maldives as couture, and it charges couture prices.
The experience
Arrival sets the tone: you board the maison's own branded seaplane at Malé and fly roughly 40 minutes north to Noonu Atoll, dropping into a lagoon most travelers have never heard of. What greets you is not the usual thatch-and-driftwood Maldives — Gathy's architecture is all clean geometry, vast ceilings and deliberate flashes of yellow, closer to a fashion house's resort collection than a castaway fantasy.
Days run at whatever pace you set. The villas are big enough that some guests barely leave them — private pools, deep terraces and dedicated butler-style service see to that — while the dining lineup, from Le 1947's French tasting menus down to barefoot seafood by the water, gives a week real range. Service is the quiet flex: precise, anticipatory, never hovering.
Then there is the spa — an entire island given over to Guerlain, reached by dhoni, with treatments created exclusively for the maison alongside hammam, sauna, yoga and Pilates. Even at a resort this polished, the spa island is the thing guests talk about afterward. It is the clearest expression of what LVMH is doing here: not a beach holiday with luxury added, but luxury as the point.
Practical & booking
Transfer reality: you land at Malé's Velana International, are met on arrival, and connect to the resort's own branded seaplane for the roughly 40-minute flight. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so if your international flight lands in the evening you will overnight in Malé and fly out the next morning — we build that into the itinerary rather than letting it surprise you.
Seasons: December through April brings the driest weather, calmest lagoon and the best light — and the biggest bills, with the festive weeks (late December into January) commanding peak rates, minimum stays and long lead times. May through November is greener and meaningfully better value, with brief tropical showers and the plankton-rich months that make the region's marine life come alive. For most couples, we like the shoulder months on either side of the dry season.
