This is one of the three or four best underwater destinations on Earth — and unusually, snorkelers get nearly as much of it as divers. Warm 28–30 °C water, house reefs off the villa steps, manta aggregations you can only visit on a snorkel, and channel dives that run like conveyor belts of sharks and rays.

Channel dives
Dry-season currents run the kandus like rivers: grey reef sharks stacked in the flow, eagle rays overhead, jacks in walls. Drift diving at its absolute best.
The house reef
The underrated hero. A great house reef means turtles at breakfast and blacktips at dusk, no boat required — and it’s the single biggest factor in how much ocean you’ll actually see.

Snorkelers: pick the resort for its house reef, not its restaurant count — ask us which islands have living coral at the ladder versus a sandy lagoon (both are lovely; only one has turtles). Bring your own mask that fits, wear a rash guard instead of relying on sunscreen, and never stand on coral, even “dead-looking” coral.
Divers: the Maldives is drift country — currents make the show, so an advanced cert and recent experience open the best channels. Liveaboards cover in a week what few resorts can match. And keep your hands to yourself — the rule underwater is look, don’t touch; glove policies vary by site and operator (a few Fuvahmulah tiger-shark operations actually require black gloves), so follow your dive briefing.
Everyone: reef-safe sunscreen only, and buy the marine-park tickets your guides ask for — Hanifaru’s fees fund the rangers who keep it the miracle it is. Respect the currents: snorkel with a buddy, stay inside designated areas, use a surface marker or lifejacket where advised, and keep an eye out for boat traffic.
